Yoke of Jesus or Yoke of Man, On Whose Side Are You?

Text: Matthew 11:30
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me... For my yoke is easy and my burden is light – Jesus”

It surprises me no more as most of the things predicted in the bible are coming pass in our life time and many are still going to come to pass.

The children of Israel demanded for king to rule over them they copied other nations by appointing a king to rule over them. Samuel delivered the totality God's instruction to them, he instructed them the advantages and misconception of appointing a king over them, but they. They have made up their mind to copy other nations of the world.

Israel Asks for a King (1 Samuel 8: 4-21)
4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead[b] us, such as all the other nations have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.

Are you copying other people today, their lifestyle, fashion, religion, and strange habits? Can it be said that our country, state and locality copying other foreign practices that pricks the heart of God?

• Are you asking for the Abominations from God?
• Does your prayer connote greed and selfishness?
• Is there a purpose and reason for that particular prayer and confessions?
• Do you have the habit of trying to please everybody and have everybody’s attention, ALL EYES ON ME Attitude!
• Is the ENDTIME spirit dictating your life or Holy Spirit?
• On whose side are you?

The saying “my yoke is easy and my burden is light” is part of a larger passage (Matthew 11:28–30), in which Jesus tells all who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. He isn’t speaking here of physical burdens. Rather, it was the heavy burden of the system of works that the Pharisees laid on the backs of the people that Jesus was offering to relieve. Later on in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus will rebuke the Pharisees for laying heavy burdens on the shoulders of the people (Matthew 23:4).

It is no longer new that certain local and foreign governments are banning Christian holidays. People yarn for democratic government outside the ruler-ship of God just after the order of Israelites, but the calamity that befell Israel after was greater than their expectation.

The “yoke of the Pharisees” is the burdensome yoke of self-righteousness and legalistic law-keeping, bible says our righteousness is a filthy rag before God. It has been said by biblical scholars that the Pharisees had added over 600 regulations regarding what qualified as “working” on the Sabbath. That is a heavy burden! Recall the story of the lawyer who asked Jesus what was the greatest commandment of the Law (Matthew 22:36). You can almost read between the lines of the man’s question: “What law, of all the laws we have, do I absolutely have to keep?”

On daily basis, our legislators are passing new laws using the tax payer’s money to carry out such humongous task but we failed to keep God’s Law which is the ultimate that guarantees peace of mind and discipline, if the laws made by man are sure and perfect why is our prison filled with inmates on daily basis? Our refusal to obey and keep God's Law brought about the yoke of the legislators upon the citizen of every nation.

Is it not better to obey than to sacrifice unnecessarily? Sacrifices made from making examples of law breakers and offenders have led to deterioration of our prisons, corruption, recklessness and breakdown of law and order. Does man really has laws and order outside the laws and ordinances of God?

Absolutely NO!

Jesus was saying that any kind of law-keeping is burdensome and amounts to a “heavy yoke” of oppression because no amount of law-keeping can bridge the gap between our sinfulness and God’s holiness. God says through the mouth of the prophet Isaiah that all of our righteous deeds are like a “polluted garment,” and Paul reiterated to the Romans that “no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law” (Romans 3:20). The good news is that Jesus promises to all who come to Him that He will give them rest from the heavy burden of trying to earn our way into heaven and rest from the oppressive yoke of self-righteousness and legalism. Jesus encourages those who are “heavy laden” to take His yoke upon them, and in so doing they will find rest for their souls. The yoke of Jesus is light and easy to carry because it is the yoke of repentance and faith followed by a singular commitment to follow Him. As the apostle John says, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3).

This is what Jesus says in Matthew 11:30. His yoke is easy and His burden light. Now, we might think that there is really no difference between the commandments of Jesus and the Jewish Law. Isn’t the same God responsible for both? Technically speaking, yes. If anything, one might argue that the commands of Jesus are even more burdensome because His reformulation of the Mosaic Law in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5—7) actually goes above and beyond a mere outward conformity to the Law and deals instead with the inner person.

What makes Jesus’ yoke easy and His burden light is that in Jesus’ own active obedience (i.e., His perfect fulfillment of the Law of God), He carried the burden that we were meant to carry. His perfect obedience is applied (imputed) to us through faith, just as His righteousness was exchanged for our sin at the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21). Our obedience to Jesus then becomes our “spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1).

Jesus sent the Comforter when He ascended into the heavens, has any of legislators sent any comforter to you lately? Furthermore, we are in dwelt by the Holy Spirit who works in our lives to mold us into the image of Christ, thereby making the yoke of Jesus easy and His burden light. The life lived by faith is a much lighter yoke and a much easier burden to carry than the heavy and burdensome yoke of self-righteousness under which some continually strive to make themselves acceptable to God through works.

Cast your burdens unto Jesus, not unto any man or system but Jesus alone.

God bless you.

To your success,

Pastor Kehinde Samuel Adegbolahan
